Warrnambool Beach Access Staircase - NatureTREAD™
This beach in Victoria is a popular destination for families and has a rich maritime heritage. The city council is committed to encouraging biodiversity on the coast, and protecting the existing dunes and vegetation.
To ensure ease of access for beach goers, the city council deemed that a beach access staircase was required. Treadwell was engaged to design, engineer and supply a beach access FRP staircase.
Project Challenges
- Needed to be corrosion resistant being exposed in a coastal environment.
- Had to withstand harsh outdoor environmental conditions.
- Required a pre-engineered and fabricated system for ease of installation.
- Had to be able to combat seawater wave loading.

- As part of the exclusive Treadwell NatureTREAD™ range, high performance GratEX® FRP Grating was specified in building the structure as a preferred solution over traditional materials.
- ArchitEX™ FRP Beams were specified as the structural support.
- GratEX® FRP Stair Treads are moulded with solid edge nosing as a single component, ensuring durability and dependability in high traffic situations.
- As FRP is lightweight and easy to install, heavy machinery is not required, protecting the natural beach environment.
- Treadwell FRP products are corrosion resistant and will withstand the corrosive coastal environment. It is virtually maintenance free, keeping maintenance costs at a minimum.
- FRP is simply fabricated and modified on site. This means there is no need for any hot works permit.
