Baxter- Sommerville Trail - NatureTREAD™
The Baxter-Somerville Trail forms part of the Peninsula Trails Project, a $7.7 million initiative delivering a 170km network of connected trails across the Mornington Peninsula. Designed to improve safety, and strengthen connections between local communities, this trail gives people a safe and scenic way of getting around. This trail network enables pedestrians, walkers and cyclists to travel from Central Melbourne through to Balnarring.
As a part of this infrastructure project, JA Carpentry was engaged to construct a boardwalk, and they selected Treadwell as its trusted FRP partner. Treadwell provided the design, manufacture and supply of the FRP products – delivering a lightweight, low-maintenance solution ideally suited to the demanding outdoor environment.
Project Challenges
- Boardwalk was installed along a railway track and posed installation challenges.
- Custom handrails systems were required.
- Being installed over dense swampy and soft ground, the weight loading of the structure was one of the key considerations.

NatureTREAD™
- FRP was specified as the material of choice as the council wanted a more durable alternative to traditional materials.
- The use of Treadwell FRP allowed for an easier installation process, without the added challenge of corrosion or needing regular maintenance.
- Being lightweight, the boardwalk could be installed quicky, with minimal damage to the surroundings.
- The handrails were custom designed to address the safety requirements of this boardwalk, especially as it was next to a road and a rail track.
- Treadwell FRP features integrated colour pigments, helping maintain colour consistency over time. This also means that removing spray painted graffiti will not damage the surface of the product.
